Remodel, Addition, and Historical Rehabilitation Structural Engineering Services
A Top Orange County Structural Engineering Firm
Company Principal Robert Lawson has been the Engineer-of-Record on nine Progressive Architecture Annual Design Awards and forty-seven California Regional AIA Awards. A member of the Structural Engineers Association, Robert was a Charter Member of the Seismic Committee, which established the first Municipal Ordinance in CA mandating retrofit of URM buildings. Sensitive to the history of the buildings, Robert brings an extensive knowledge of historic building materials to each historical rehabilitation project.
Partner Tom Burke’s structural design expertise was an important element contributing to the success of the Musselman Building project, which required a seismic upgrade of a three story URM (unreinforced masonry) building. A particularly challenging seismic engineering project, Tom’s creative solution (as described in the detailed project description) achieved the project goals, saving the client the time and extra money originally anticipated.

CASE STUDIES
Obstacles
Hillside construction, expansive soils, curved surfaces, infinity edge
pool and jacuzzi out of grade.
Solutions
Caisson and grade beam system was used for the foundations. Due to the
presence of expansive soils, the lower level floors are structural slabs.
Structural steel members were used to create the curved decks and
canopies. A composite metal deck and concrete slab system was used for the
mid-level stepped deck. A caisson and grade beam system was used to
support the pool and jacuzzi which are out of grade.
